Leipzig is one of six regional centres in the state of Saxony. More than one million people live in the conurbation formed by Leipzig and the neighbouring city of Halle (Saale).
Since reunification, Porsche and BMW have established major manufacturing facilities there, and companies from the communications and IT sectors have also discovered the city. As the home of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (the public broadcaster for Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt) and many publishers, Leipzig has become a prominent media centre. The region around the city also plays an important role in the energy and logistics sectors.
Leipzig has a long history of hosting trade fairs and industry. As a commercial real estate location, the city is one of the most interesting markets in eastern Germany. Leipzig, Halle and nine other cities in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia form the Central Germany Metropolitan Region, of which Leipzig and Dresden are the core cities.
